Adult Choir and The Handbell Program at Holy Apostles

Adult Choir

Our adult choir is for all adults beginning in high school. The choir sings at the 9:30am service, September through mid-June. They present an anthem 3-4 times a month beginning the end of September. On those Sundays when they do not provide an anthem, they are still in attendance to support congregational singing as they do every other week.

The choir sings a variety of styles including spirituals, classical, hymn tunes and contemporary. They have been accompanied by flute, handbells, cello, violin, trumpet, guitar and assorted percussion instruments, as well as the piano. New members are welcome at any time. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings, 7:45-9pm, in the sanctuary.

Handbell Program

Holy Apostles’ has a 3-choir handbell program which began in the fall of 2002. The purpose of the bell choir is to provide a musical experience outside the choir for those desiring it, without the need to sing or read music. The choirs all rehearse from early September through early June and provide music 5-6 times a year…each. They play on 3-octaves of Malmark handbells as well as 3-octaves of Malmark choir chimes. Assorted percussion has been added when called for, including windchimes, drum (we just purchased a new cajon), flute, trumpet and cello.
Lyn Powell, the director and founder of the program, is a member of Handbell Musicians of America. This membership allows our ringers to participate in guild events, which they do. Members have attended a variety of workshops including festival/conferences, read & ring seminars and National Seminar.

Handbell Choirs

The Bells of St. James

The Bells of St. James is the original 3-octave choir begun in 2002. Several of the original members still ring with this choir. The typical age range of the ringers is teen through late adult.

The choir rings level 2-3 music, providing an anthem 5-6 times per year. They also accompany hymns on special occasions. The music chosen is in a variety of styles from hymn tunes and classical to contemporary and spirituals as well as original compositions. Rehearsals are on Sunday following Church School, 11:15am - 12:30pm.

The Grace Notes

The Grace Notes was founded in 2005 to provide a group for our more advanced ringers. It began as a 6-person ensemble, but evolved into a quartet by 2007.

The current group has been ringing together for 7+ years. They have performed as a quintet, quartet, trio and duets. They ring moderate level music, and present an anthem 5-6 times per program year. They also assist with accompaniments for choir anthems, and fill in as needed with the other choirs. The quartet rehearses on Thursday evenings, 7-7:45pm. Membership is by appointment by the director.

Praise Ringers

Praise Ringers is the beginning handbell choir. It began as a chime choir for youth in 2010. It is open to youth beginning in grade 5 as well as adults. The purpose of the group is to prepare beginning ringers to move up to the larger choir as they are ready and as openings occur.

All new ringers must begin in this training group. Several members already ring with The Bells of St. James while continuing with this choir. While they began strictly as a chime choir, they now ring bells as well. Praise Ringers rehearse on Wednesday evenings, 7-8pm. They present music 4-5 times a year. Those wishing to learn the art of handbell ringing begin here. Openings may be available. Contact the director, Lyn Powell.
